TLDR Finasteride may increase risk of suicidal thoughts and self-harm.
Health Canada has found a possible link between the use of finasteride, a medication used for hair loss, and an increased risk of suicidal ideation and self-injurious behavior. The agency's review was triggered by case reports of suicide, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts related to finasteride use. While previous reviews could not demonstrate a definite link, a subsequent assessment of Canadian reports found a possible causative relationship. Over 350 international reports of suicide/self-injury-related events were also found in the WHO's ADR database, and five studies published between 2015 and 2018 supported a link between finasteride use and a risk of suicidal ideation. Health Canada has notified the manufacturer to update the product information regarding this safety issue.
