TLDR Finasteride effectively reduced priapism episodes in children with sickle cell disease without side effects.
This study reported on the use of finasteride for treating recurrent priapism in 5 children and adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD). The patients, with an average age of 12.2 years, experienced frequent episodes of priapism before treatment, with one patient having episodes nearly daily. Finasteride was administered daily for an average of 7.5 months, resulting in a significant reduction in the frequency and duration of priapism episodes. After treatment, 4 patients experienced no further crises, and one had only sporadic, shorter episodes. No side effects were observed, and all patients maintained normal erectile function. The study concluded that finasteride appeared to be an effective short-term treatment for recurrent priapism in this population, but emphasized the need for long-term studies with more participants to confirm its safety and efficacy.
