TLDR Low levels of vitamin D and ferritin may increase the risk of female pattern hair loss.
The study investigated the relationship between female pattern hair loss (FPHL) and serum levels of 25 hydroxy vitamin D and ferritin in 30 FPHL cases and 30 healthy controls aged 17-50. Results showed that FPHL patients had significantly lower serum ferritin (17.02 +/- 16.07 ng/ml) and 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels (15.98 +/- 7.33 ng/ml) compared to controls (49.40 +/- 27 ng/ml and 32.89 +/- 20.63 ng/ml, respectively; p=0.001). A significant difference in serum ferritin was found across different stages of FPHL, with the lowest values in stage 1. Although vitamin D levels decreased with disease severity, no significant difference was found between disease grades. The study concludes that decreased levels of serum 25 hydroxy vitamin D and ferritin may be risk factors for developing FPHL.
