TLDR Facebook groups play a crucial role in supporting and guiding patients on scalp cooling and hair loss during chemotherapy.
A survey study involving 152 women in four Facebook groups dedicated to scalp cooling and cold caps revealed that 88% joined for support, 83% for scalp cooling instructions, 60% for hair regrowth advice, and 49% for hair loss camouflaging tips. Participants frequently tried hair loss vitamins or supplements (20%), wigs or hair pieces (19%), and Toppik (17%). Despite seeking hair regrowth information online, only 5% consulted a dermatologist. For eyebrow and eyelash loss, 72% relied on Facebook groups, compared to 6% consulting oncologists and 4% dermatologists. The study highlights the significant role of Facebook groups in influencing treatment decisions for chemotherapy-induced alopecia, emphasizing the need for dermatologists to be aware of these sources and their clinical validity.
