TLDR The new omeprazole nanoemulgel shows promise as a topical treatment for infections.
This study explored the potential of repurposing omeprazole, a common proton pump inhibitor, for treating skin and soft tissue infections due to its anti-microbial effects. A novel chitosan-coated omeprazole-loaded nanoemulgel was developed using high-speed homogenization. The formulation was characterized for various physicochemical properties, including particle size (369.7 ± 8.77 nm), zeta potential (-15.3 ± 6.7 mV), and drug content (90.92 ± 1.37%). In-vitro and ex-vivo analyses showed significant drug release and permeation, with 82.16% and 72.21 ± 1.71 μg/cm², respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration was 1.25 mg/mL, indicating effective antibacterial activity. The chitosan coating enhanced the drug's antibacterial properties, suggesting a promising topical treatment for microbial infections.
