TLDR Eyelash loss can indicate various health issues, and excessive growth may be linked to certain conditions or medications; both require careful examination and tailored treatment.
The 2014 review discussed the unique characteristics of eyelashes, their role in eye protection, and their cosmetic importance. It highlighted that eyelash loss could be a symptom of various diseases, including congenital syndromes, dermatological, ophthalmological or endocrinological disorders, neoplasms, intoxications, or traumatic causes. The loss could be scarring or non-scarring, and may occur alone or with eyebrow or hair loss. The review also covered trichomegaly, or excessive eyelash growth, which could be associated with congenital conditions, acquired systemic or local diseases, or various drugs. The authors stressed the importance of a detailed examination of eyelashes to identify underlying disorders, and the need for treatment management to be determined according to patient demand, associated complications, and underlying disorders.
