Estrogen-Induced Gynecomastia After Use of Estrogen-Containing Topical Therapies

Kevin Schmidt, G. Wagner, H Mensing
TLDR Estrogen treatments can cause unwanted effects in men and should be used cautiously.
A 61-year-old man experienced loss of libido, decreased hair growth, and gynecomastia after using an estrogen-containing hair tincture for six months to treat diffuse alopecia areata. These symptoms resolved within four weeks after discontinuing the treatment, and his hormone levels returned to normal. The study highlighted that estrogen preparations are generally contraindicated in males due to potential systemic effects, and if used, hormone levels should be monitored.
