Estrogen-Induced Gynecomastia After Use of Estrogen-Containing Topical Therapies

Kevin Schmidt, G. Wagner, H Mensing
TLDR Estrogen treatments can cause unwanted effects in men and should be used cautiously.
A 61-year-old man experienced loss of libido, decreased beard growth, and gynecomastia after using an estrogen-containing hair tincture for six months to treat diffuse alopecia areata. These symptoms resolved within four weeks after discontinuing the tincture, and hormone levels returned to normal. The study highlighted that locally applied estrogen preparations could cause unwanted systemic effects in men, suggesting they are generally contraindicated. If such treatments are necessary, monitoring hormone levels, specifically testosterone and estradiol, was recommended.
