TLDR The workshop discussed the role of a protein called calreticulin in health and disease, its potential as a treatment target, and its possible use as a disease marker.
The 12th International Calreticulin Workshop in 2017 focused on the role of the endoplasmic reticulum, particularly the protein calreticulin, in health and disease. The workshop discussed the importance of calreticulin in biological processes such as calcium homeostasis, immune response, and cell adhesion, and its implications in diseases like cancer and autoimmune disorders. The potential of calreticulin as a therapeutic target was explored, with studies showing its role in diseases such as haemophilia, obesity, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. The event also highlighted the potential use of extracellular calreticulin as a disease marker. Notably, topical application of calreticulin was found to enhance wound healing and induce hair follicle neogenesis in diabetic mice, suggesting potential therapeutic applications for wound treatment and hair loss. The workshop concluded with plans for a subsequent event in 2019.
