TLDR The food supplement with L-cystine, Serenoa repens extract, and biotin safely reduced hair loss and improved hair growth in men and women.
In 2017, a clinical trial with 70 participants evaluated the efficacy and safety of a food supplement containing L-cystine, Serenoa repens extract, and biotin for treating hair loss in healthy males and females. The study, which was a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, controlled trial, found that the supplement significantly reduced hair loss in women with acute telogen effluvium and improved the anagen/telogen ratio in men with androgenic alopecia, indicating more hair in the growing phase. Both men and women reported improvements in hair volume and appearance, and the treatment was well tolerated with only one reported adverse event. Despite its small sample size and the subjective nature of self-assessment questionnaires, the study concluded that the supplement was a safe and effective alternative to drug treatments for alopecia. The study was funded by Isdin SA, and the final content decisions were made by Dr. Vincenzo Nobile.
