TLDR Nitrendipine and nifedipine effectively block muscle contractions, while papaverine relaxes them and minoxidil needs high amounts to work.
This study examined the effects of various vasoactive agents on isolated rabbit aortic smooth muscle contractions. Nitrendipine and nifedipine were found to be potent and specific blockers of depolarization-induced contraction in this tissue. Papaverine relaxed both types of contractions equipotently, and minoxidil was effective only in extremely high concentrations. The study confirmed and extended previous results with verapamil and perhexiline.
