TLDR A liquid protein diet significantly affected young rats' body weight but had little effect on their gingival collagen metabolism.
The study evaluated the effects of a liquid protein diet (LPD) on gingival collagen metabolism in young rats. Experimental rats on LPD showed a 20% decrease in body weight by day 48, while pair-fed and ad libitum groups increased by 47% and 267%, respectively. Despite these body weight changes, collagen content per gram of gingiva did not significantly differ among the groups. However, significant differences in gingival collagen synthesis were observed. The study concluded that LPD had a profound impact on overall body condition but minimal effect on gingival collagen metabolism in young rats.
