TLDR L'Oréal's research and workshops have advanced understanding and tailored cosmetics for African hair and skin.
The editorial highlighted the significant strides made in understanding the physiology of African hair and skin over the past two decades, driven by L'Oréal Research & Innovation. Since 2004, L'Oréal has organized workshops in Africa, bringing together dermatologists and scientists to share their findings. The third workshop in Accra, Ghana, in 2010, featured over 80 participants from various African countries, the USA, and Europe. Key presentations included the Roberts Skin Type classification, insights into papillary dermis biology, hair breakage perceptions, and the impact of chronic illnesses on hair structure. Discussions also covered Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia, HIV transmission risks, acne specificities, and the prevalence of dermatological conditions in Africa. The workshop underscored the importance of prevention, education, and the regulation of skin bleaching products.
