TLDR Many women removed the Norplant implant early due to side effects like headaches and irregular bleeding, indicating a need for better patient counseling.
Researchers interviewed 40 women who had the Norplant contraceptive implant removed early at Louisiana State University Medical Center to identify side effects and reasons for removal. The average use duration was 13.4 months, with common side effects including headaches (59%), irregular bleeding (56%), and amenorrhea (54%). The main reasons for removal were irregular or heavy bleeding (27%), amenorrhea (19%), and headaches (16%). Despite 87% attending education classes and 82% being aware of bleeding risks, the study highlighted the need for better patient screening and counseling on side effects like headaches, weight gain, and hair loss. Therapeutic interventions could help manage irregular bleeding, a prevalent issue. Only 47% would recommend Norplant, suggesting mixed satisfaction with the implant.
