TLDR Finasteride and dutasteride may cause macular abnormalities.
A retrospective study involving 31 male patients who had been treated with finasteride or dutasteride for benign prostatic hypertrophy or alopecia found that 10 of them developed macular abnormalities, including foveal cavitation, lamellar hole, and metamorphopsia. The patients had received finasteride for 36-122 months at a cumulative dose of 4637.5-21900mg, dutasteride for 24-116 months at a cumulative dose of 365-1095mg, or both for a total of 54 months. The study suggests that 5alpha-reductase inhibitors may be associated with macular abnormalities.
