TLDR Dutasteride can reduce night-time urination but it doesn't improve sleep quality.
The REDUCE clinical trial, a 4-year randomized, multicenter study involving 6,914 men aged 50-75 years, investigated the effects of dutasteride, a medication for benign prostatic hyperplasia, on nocturia (night-time urination) and sleep quality. The results showed that dutasteride modestly improved nocturia at 2 years (-0.15, 95% CI -0.21, -0.09) and 4 years (-0.24, 95% CI -0.31, -0.18) but did not improve sleep quality. These findings were consistent even when the analysis was limited to men with lower urinary tract symptoms, nocturia, poor sleep, or combinations thereof. Therefore, the study concluded that men with poor sleep who complain of nocturia may not benefit from oral benign prostatic hyperplasia treatment in terms of sleep improvement.
