TLDR Certain medications can cause gum problems, so patients and healthcare providers should be aware and monitor oral health.
The study analyzed 11,465 reports from the USFDA AERS database to assess drug-associated gingival disorders, finding significant links between various drugs and conditions like gingival hypertrophy, atrophy, and bleeding. Anticonvulsants, calcium channel blockers, and immunosuppressants were notably associated with gingival hypertrophy, while clindamycin and oxaliplatin were linked to atrophy. The study also identified new signals, such as finasteride's association with gum atrophy and COVID-19 vaccines with gum disorders. These findings highlight the need for awareness of oral side effects from medications and suggest systematic oral health screening and collaboration between healthcare providers and dental professionals to improve patient care and medication safety.
