TLDR Both contraceptive pill doses effectively reduced androgen levels in women with PCOS.
In a study conducted in Kolkata, India, 112 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were randomly assigned to receive an oral contraceptive pill containing 3 mg drospirenone and either 30 μg or 20 μg ethinyl estradiol (EE). The primary outcome measured was the change in the free androgen index over 12 months. Results showed that both dosages led to similar reductions in androgen levels, with a decrease of 5.23 ± 5.79 for the 30 μg group and 4.99 ± 5.86 for the 20 μg group at 12 months, indicating that the lower dose of EE was as effective as the higher dose in managing androgen levels in women with PCOS.
