TLDR Both contraceptive pill doses effectively reduced androgen levels in women with PCOS.
The study compared the effects of two oral contraceptive pills containing drospirenone and either 20 μg or 30 μg ethinyl estradiol (EE) on women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Conducted in Kolkata, India, 112 patients with PCOS were randomly assigned to receive one of the two dosages and were followed for 12 months. The primary outcome measured was the change in the free androgen index. Results showed that both dosages led to a similar decrease in androgen levels, with no significant difference between the 30 μg and 20 μg groups at both 6 and 12 months. The study concluded that the 20 μg EE pill had similar effects on androgen levels as the 30 μg EE pill in patients with PCOS.
