TLDR A 33-year-old woman with PCOS and metabolic syndrome was unusually diagnosed with a bone condition called DISH, suggesting a possible link between these conditions.
In 2019, a case report documented a 33-year-old woman with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and metabolic syndrome who was diagnosed with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), a condition usually seen in older men and rare in individuals under 50. This case was the first to report DISH in a woman under 40 and to associate DISH with PCOS and metabolic syndrome. The patient's diagnosis was supported by radiographic imaging and she was treated with a combination of medications and physiotherapy, resulting in significant pain reduction but only mild improvement in spinal mobility after one year. The authors suggest that there may be a link between DISH and metabolic conditions like PCOS and metabolic syndrome, recommending early MRI scans of the spine in patients with these conditions for DISH detection. This case indicates the need for further research to explore the potential relationship between these conditions.
