TLDR Hidradenitis suppurativa is linked to various diseases like obesity, depression, arthritis, and Crohn's disease, but often occurs alone.
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) was a pathologic follicular disease that significantly impacted patients' lives and was often associated with other conditions such as obesity, depression, and pain. It was linked to various diseases, including acne conglobata, dissecting cellulitis, pilonidal cysts, and obesity. HS had notable associations with seronegative arthritis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and pyoderma gangrenosum, although these associations were sometimes underreported. Rare links included SAPHO syndrome, Dowling-Degos disease, and Fox-Fordyce disease. HS was occasionally connected to ophthalmic pathologies like Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness syndrome and interstitial keratitis. Kidney-related issues, such as proteinuria and acute nephritis, were also associated with HS, with some cases resolving post-renal transplant. Other conditions linked to HS included steatocystoma multiplex, Sjogren Syndrome, amyloid, and pyoderma vegetans. HS could result in lymphedema due to scarring and was sometimes accompanied by metabolic syndrome-related conditions. Chronic inflammation from HS could lead to squamous cell cancer, and certain drugs could induce HS. Despite these associations, most HS cases occurred in isolation.
