The Differences Between Hormonal Pills and Injection Contraception Adverse Effects: Pekanbaru Puskesmas Case Study
May 2019
TLDR Injection contraception has more negative side effects than hormonal pills.
The study aimed to compare the adverse effects of hormonal pill and injection contraception methods in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. It was a cross-sectional study that analyzed data from a local Puskesmas (community health center) using cross tabulation and Independent T-tests. The results showed that the most common adverse effects were weight gain (74%), menstrual cycle irregularity (53%), mood changes (53%), libido changes (47%), and hair loss (47%). The study found that these adverse effects were more prevalent in those using injection hormonal contraception. Specifically, all adverse effects occurred 18% more frequently with the progestin-only injection method compared to the estradiol levonorgestrel combination pills. The conclusion drawn was that there are significant differences in adverse effects between the two hormonal contraception methods, with the injection method showing a higher incidence of negative side effects.
