TLDR Hair follicle cells and skin cells differ in keratinization and other features.
The study cultured human hair follicle cells (HFC) and epidermal keratinocytes (EK) on mixed collagen membranes to compare their differentiation. Both cell types showed polygonal epithelioid arrangements, but EK cultures developed large denucleated cells and more prominent stratification more quickly than HFC cultures. HFC cultures lacked keratohyalin granules and showed suppressed cornified envelope formation compared to EK. This suggested that HFC and EK differed in their degree of keratinization and other characteristics.
