TLDR Surgery, especially prostatectomy, effectively reduces detrusor overactivity in bladder outlet obstruction patients.
The study analyzed the evolution of detrusor overactivity in 161 patients with bladder outlet obstruction, focusing on those undergoing watchful waiting, medical therapy, or surgery. At baseline, 52% of patients exhibited detrusor overactivity, which decreased to 40% at follow-up. The study found that detrusor overactivity persisted in patients who underwent watchful waiting or medical therapy, with no significant change in prevalence. However, surgical treatment, particularly prostatectomy, significantly reduced the incidence of detrusor overactivity, with a notable decrease from 68% at baseline to 31% at follow-up, indicating its effectiveness in managing this condition over a period of up to 5 years.
