TLDR The detoxification process made Abrus precatorius seeds safe and effective for use.
The study investigated the detoxification of Abrus precatorius seeds using a traditional Ayurvedic method (shodhana) by boiling them in cow's milk. The detoxified extract (A2) was non-toxic at 2 g/kg, unlike the untreated extract (A1). Thin-layer chromatography confirmed the absence of a toxic spot in A2. Both extracts promoted hair growth in rats, with A2 showing better results than A1 and comparable to Minoxidil. The findings suggested that shodhana effectively removed toxins while preserving the seeds' therapeutic benefits.
