TLDR Cold waving solutions quickly reduce cystine to cysteine in hair.
The study developed a method to determine cystine and cysteine in altered human hair fibers by hydrolyzing the hair with hydrochloric acid and using the Sullivan method for measurement. To differentiate between cystine and cysteine, iodoacetic acid was used to block sulfhydryl groups. Optimal hydrolysis was achieved at 118°-120°C for 6 hours. The study found that cold waving solutions reduce cystine to cysteine within 4 minutes, with minimal further effect. Additionally, hair reduced with a cold waving solution and potassium bromate at room temperature for 15 minutes showed residual cystine values of 3% or less, with most reoxidation occurring within the first 3 minutes. This method is reliable for understanding hair treatment chemistry.

community Any clinical study on cysteine alone for hair loss?

      in Research/Science  6 upvotes 7 months ago
The conversation discusses the lack of clinical studies on cysteine alone for hair loss, with the original poster already using medications like Minoxidil and finasteride. Suggestions include trying 2ddr as a growth stimulant, though concerns about side effects like gas are mentioned.

community Let Me Sell You on NAC

       14 upvotes 6 years ago
The conversation discusses using NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) alongside minoxidil and finasteride for hair loss, with some users noting potential hairline improvement and increased energy. The original poster reduced their finasteride dosage due to mental decline and anxiety, and while NAC's effects on hair are anecdotal, it is considered low-risk with other health benefits.
