TLDR Dermoscopy improves diagnosis and treatment planning for trichostasis spinulosa.
This retrospective study of 306 patients with trichostasis spinulosa (TS) aimed to describe dermoscopic features and correlate them with clinical characteristics and treatment responses. The study found that signs of hair retention (SHR) were minimal in 40.5% of cases, while follicular keratosis (FK) appeared as orange-yellowish keratotic plugs in 92.7% of cases. Vellus hairs and hair tufts were common, observed in 81.6% and 48.7% of cases, respectively. Dermoscopic blackhead-like structures (DBH) were present in 53.9% of cases. Therapeutic demand was higher among females and those with recurrences post-treatment. Complete improvement was noted in patients with DBH and minimal SHR. The study concluded that dermoscopy enhances diagnostic accuracy and proposed a new dermoscopic classification with therapeutic implications.
