TLDR Dermoscopy shows that varying hair shaft thickness and single hair follicles are main signs of male pattern baldness, especially in the fronto-temporal region.
In a 2020 study involving 49 male patients with androgenic alopecia, dermoscopy revealed that hair shaft diameter variation was present in 88% of patients, single hair follicular units in 97%, and yellow dots in 38%, primarily in the fronto-temporal area. The most common stage of hair loss was Hamilton-Norwood Grade II, found in 40% of cases. The findings suggest that single hair follicular units and hair shaft diameter variation are key dermoscopic features for diagnosing and assessing androgenic alopecia, particularly in the fronto-temporal region.
