Do Dermatoses Trigger Neurodegenerative Diseases? A Retrospective Observational Study

    Mehmet Semih Çelik, Hamza Aktaş
TLDR Skin issues are common in people with neurodegenerative diseases.
This retrospective observational study investigated the distribution of dermatological findings in 848 patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The study found that fungal infections (11.9%), xerosis (11.0%), eczematous dermatitis (8.6%), and seborrheic dermatitis (4.7%) were the most frequently observed dermatological conditions among these patients. These high-prevalence dermatological findings were significantly more common compared to other lower-prevalence conditions. The study highlights the importance of dermatological evaluations in patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
