TLDR The most common skin problems in polycystic ovarian disease are hirsutism and acne, and managing these symptoms is key for treatment.
The study conducted from April 2016 to March 2017 aimed to identify the pattern of dermatologic manifestations in polycystic ovarian disease in northern Indian females. The study found that the two most common skin manifestations were hirsutism and acne, seen in 83.8% and 59.5% of subjects respectively. Female pattern hair loss was observed in 45.6% of the females. The three most frequent hormonal abnormalities noted were raised L/H ratio, testosterone, and LH levels, seen in approximately 45%, 35%, and 21% of cases respectively. The study concluded that the skin manifestations of PCOS play a significant role in its management by dermatologists, with lifestyle modification and systemic treatment being the mainstay of treatment. The study also emphasized the importance of early monitoring for potential cardiovascular risks to reduce morbidity.
