TLDR Patients with pernio have lower vitamin B12 and ferritin levels than healthy people.
The study compared vitamin B12, folate, and ferritin levels in 91 patients with pernio, an inflammatory condition caused by cold exposure, to those in 91 healthy controls. It found that patients with pernio had significantly lower levels of vitamin B12 and ferritin, but not folate, compared to the control group. The results suggest that vitamin B12 deficiency may contribute to the development of pernio through a mechanism that affects vasospasm, potentially via homocysteine metabolism, although homocysteine levels were not measured in this study. The authors recommend further research to explore the relationship between vitamin B12 and homocysteine levels in pernio patients, as vitamin B12 supplementation could be a therapeutic option if a link with hyperhomocysteinemia is established. The study was conducted ethically with approval from the relevant committee and informed consent from all participants, and there were no conflicts of interest or financial support reported.
