TLDR High Demodex mite density may be linked to sebaceous hyperplasia.
The study investigated the presence and density of Demodex folliculorum in sebaceous hyperplasia (SH) compared to a control group. It involved 11 patients with SH and 40 controls, with excision biopsies performed on 8 SH patients. Results showed a significantly higher prevalence and density of Demodex in SH patients (100% prevalence, mean density of 28.9/lesion) compared to controls (85% prevalence, mean density of 2.1/follicle). Histopathological findings in SH included abnormal keratinization, follicular plugging, and inflammatory infiltration. The study suggested a possible relationship between high Demodex density and the development of SH skin lesions.
