TLDR About 17% of people in France have dandruff, and those with dandruff are more likely to have sensitive and itchy scalps.
In a study conducted in France, a representative sample of 1,703 subjects was surveyed to evaluate the prevalence of dandruff. The results showed that 16.56% of the French population reported excessive scalp desquamation, known as dandruff. Among those with dandruff, 58.15% described their scalp as sensitive or very sensitive, and 68% experienced itching, which was significantly higher than the 21.5% with sensitive scalps and 25.9% with itching among those without dandruff. The prevalence of itching in general was 41% for individuals with dandruff compared to 26% without, and specifically itchy scalps were reported by 51% of subjects with dandruff versus 15% without (P < .001). This study indicates a significant correlation between dandruff and pruritus in the French population, suggesting that those with dandruff are more likely to experience sensitive skin and itching, not only on the scalp but potentially on other areas of the body as well.
