TLDR Finasteride significantly reduced tics and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in Tourette syndrome patients.
The document reports on a study involving 10 patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) that examined the effects of finasteride (FIN) on the severity of tics and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The study found that finasteride treatment led to significant reductions in global symptoms, total tics, motor tics, and phonic tics, with p-values less than .0001, as assessed by the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS). Additionally, in the subset of 6 patients with obsessive-compulsive symptoms, there was a significant reduction in total scores and compulsion subscale scores on the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), with p-values of .028, although there was no significant reduction in obsession subscale scores (p = .068). The study suggests finasteride may be a potential therapeutic option for adult male patients with TS and highlights the need for future controlled studies to further evaluate the effectiveness of finasteride.
