In Vivo Evaluation of Cromolyn Sodium Topical Gels for the Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis
TLDR Cromolyn sodium oleate gel is more effective and safer for treating atopic dermatitis than dexamethasone.
This study evaluated the efficacy of a cromolyn sodium (CS) gel for treating atopic dermatitis (AD) in a mice model, comparing it to a topical corticosteroid. Two 4% CS gels were formulated, with the oleate gel showing superior permeation and skin retention. In a 3-week study involving 24 mice, the CS oleate gel demonstrated the highest scab reduction (78.48% ± 25.00%) and 100% healing in 2 mice, outperforming the dexamethasone group, which showed significant adverse effects like skin atrophy and hair loss. The results suggest that the CS oleate gel is a more effective and safer treatment for AD than dexamethasone.
