TLDR The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery recommends that hair restoration surgeons should be skilled in diagnosing and treating hair loss, ensuring patient safety, optimizing aesthetic results, and managing complications.
In 2009, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) developed and published a Core Curriculum for Hair Restoration Surgery (CCHRS) and identified core competencies for hair restoration surgeons. These competencies were developed to guide the development of training programs and to ensure that physicians could practice safe, aesthetically sound hair restoration surgery. The competencies cover a range of skills, including diagnosing and treating hair loss, ensuring patient safety, optimizing aesthetic results, and managing complications of hair restoration surgery. The ISHRS believed that these competencies were an important contribution to physician education in hair restoration surgery. The competencies also demonstrated that contemporary hair restoration surgery required knowledge of several medical disciplines, including genetics, endocrinology, dermatology, tissue preservation, and surgery.
