Congenital Ptosis Repair with a Frontalis Silicon Sling: Comparison Between Fox's Single Pentagon Technique and a Modified Crawford Double Triangle Technique
TLDR The modified Crawford technique resulted in less lagophthalmos and better cosmetic outcomes for patients with lateral droop.
In a study comparing two frontalis sling surgery techniques for ptosis using a silicon rod, 52 eyes from 50 patients were analyzed. The Fox's single pentagon technique and a modified Crawford double triangle technique both resulted in fair to good cosmetic outcomes, with no significant difference between the groups. However, patients with preoperative lateral droop had better cosmetic results with the modified Crawford technique. The mean increase in marginal reflex distance 1 (MRD-1) was similar between the groups, but the Fox group experienced more lagophthalmos compared to the modified Crawford group, which was statistically significant. Both techniques effectively reduced blepharoptosis and achieved a natural cosmetic appearance, with the modified Crawford technique showing better results in specific cases.
