TLDR Radiofrequency and scalpel incisions have similar clinical outcomes for upper eyelid surgery.
In a study from 2008, researchers compared the effects of radiofrequency (RF) and scalpel incisions in upper blepharoplasty on 46 eyelids from 23 subjects, with each subject receiving both types of incisions on different eyelids. The study, which was prospective, randomized, blind, comparative, and interventional, found no significant difference in sensation recovery or scar formation between the two methods, despite RF causing greater tissue damage. Histologic examination of 16 eyelids also showed no significant difference in intratissue hemorrhage and inflammatory cell infiltration. The study concluded that RF and scalpel incisions are comparable in clinical outcomes for upper blepharoplasty.
