TLDR Both concentrations of triamcinolone acetonide are equally effective and safe for treating patchy alopecia areata.
The study compared the efficacy and safety of two concentrations of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide (5 mg/mL vs 10 mg/mL) in treating patchy alopecia areata on the scalp. It involved 85 patients who received monthly injections and were divided into two groups based on the concentration. The results showed no statistically significant difference in response rates or side effects between the two groups, with complete hair regrowth observed in 43.5% of patients in the 5 mg/mL group and 53.8% in the 10 mg/mL group. Minor local side effects occurred in 17% of the 5 mg/mL group and 25% of the 10 mg/mL group. Recurrence rates were similar, with about 45% experiencing recurrence after 1-3 years. The study concluded that both concentrations were equally effective and safe, with disease duration over 6 months correlating with a poorer response.
