TLDR Most patients use PRP for hair loss and facial rejuvenation with minor side effects.
A survey involving 576 patients from 20 academic and private sites in the U.S. was conducted to understand the common practices and effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment. The majority of the patients were females (72%, 412/576) and Caucasians (82%, 473/576), with 69% (395/576) being 40 years and older. The most common uses for PRP were for androgenetic alopecia (82%, 470/576) and facial rejuvenation (10%, 56/576). Adverse events included pain (20%, 113/576), redness (8%, 47/576), swelling (7%, 38/576), and headache (2%, 14/576), with less than .01% (6/576) of treatments resulting in effects lasting beyond a week. No serious adverse events were reported.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
