TLDR Both finasteride and drospirenone treatments improved symptoms and increased pregnancy rates in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
The study involved 113 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) without metabolic abnormalities, divided into two groups: 58 received finasteride (5 mg) and 55 received combined oral contraceptives (COCs) with drospirenone (3 mg) for 6 months. Both treatments showed significant therapeutic effects, with finasteride leading to 7 pregnancies and COCs with drospirenone resulting in 8 pregnancies. Finasteride was associated with a reduction in weight, body mass index, and waist-to-hip ratio, with fewer side effects, while COCs with drospirenone significantly reduced acne and the free androgen index. Both treatments improved reproductive function in women with PCOS. Additionally, a separate experiment on mice suggested that endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) might play a role in healing damaged endometrium, indicating a potential mechanism in the pathogenesis of endometriosis.
