TLDR Coenzyme Q10 helps reduce aging in human hair.
In a study conducted by Giesen et al., coenzyme Q10 was found to have anti-aging effects on human hair. The study demonstrated that coenzyme Q10 stimulates the gene expression of various hair keratins, particularly those that diminish with age in hair follicles. This was shown using cultivated hair follicle keratinocytes. A placebo-controlled panel study with healthy volunteers over 40 years old was conducted, where participants applied shampoo and tonic formulations enriched with coenzyme Q10 daily for 4 days. The gene expression of different hair keratins from plucked hair follicles was measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction techniques. The results indicated an increase in age-relevant hair keratins in the hair roots treated with coenzyme Q10. The study concluded that coenzyme Q10 is a beneficial ingredient for hair care formulations, as it provides anti-aging properties by activating specific keratins needed for mature hair.
