TLDR The pigment in black eyeliner can spread in the skin and may cause permanent eyelash loss.
The study examined the histological effects of freshly applied black eyeliner pigment on an eyelid, revealing that the pigment was composed of 98% iron and 2% titanium. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the particles were located in the extracellular matrix, with no intracellular presence. Light microscopy detected the implant material at various dermal levels, in dermal lymphatics, and around hair follicles. The findings suggested that systemic exposure to the pigment was possible and provided explanations for permanent eyelash loss observed after the procedure.
