The Chlorine-Hair Interaction: Effect of Combining Chlorination with Cosmetic Treatments on Hair Properties
January 1988
TLDR Cosmetic treatments after chlorination damage hair more than treatments before.
The study examined the effects of combining chlorination with various cosmetic treatments on human hair properties. It found that cosmetic treatments applied after chlorination (posttreatments) had a more significant impact on frictional properties and surface morphology than those applied before chlorination (pretreatments). Specifically, bleaching and dyeing led to more noticeable changes in surface properties and weight loss of hair fibers, whereas perming primarily affected the tensile properties of the hair.
