TLDR Chemotherapy may help with survival in children with medulloblastoma, but more research is needed.
The systematic review on chemotherapy for children with medulloblastoma, involving 7 RCTs with 1,080 children, found no definitive evidence favoring chemotherapy over non-chemotherapy treatments in terms of overall survival (OS) or event-free survival/disease-free survival (EFS/DFS). While some studies suggested a benefit of chemotherapy in EFS/DFS, this was not consistent across all studies. Adverse effects like severe infections and fever/neutropenia were more common in chemotherapy treatments. The review highlighted the need for more high-quality research due to variations in study designs, definitions, and treatment protocols, and concluded that current evidence was insufficient to definitively recommend chemotherapy.
