TLDR Characterizing lipid nanoparticles is challenging due to issues with sensitivity, reproducibility, and reliability.
This review discussed the challenges in the physical characterization of lipid nanoparticles, which were used in various applications such as drug delivery, vaccines, and diagnostics. It highlighted the difficulties in designing reliable protocols for evaluating nanoparticles due to issues with sensitivity, reproducibility, and reliability. The review compared techniques for morphologic characterization (Cryo-TEM, SEM, X-ray), size measurement (dynamic light scattering, sedimentation field flow fractionation, optical microscopy), and surface properties (zeta potential measurement). Additionally, it introduced an amperometric tool to assess antioxidant activity and the interaction of nanomaterials with skin membranes.
