TLDR Patients with early-onset androgenetic alopecia have a higher risk of metabolic syndrome and carotid arteriosclerosis, suggesting the need for early cardiovascular screening and prevention.
This study investigated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and carotid arteriosclerosis in 30 patients with early-onset androgenetic alopecia (AGA) compared to a control group of 30 dermatology patients without AGA. Results showed that 50% of AGA patients met the criteria for metabolic syndrome, significantly higher than the 13% in the control group. Additionally, 9 AGA patients had atheromatous plaque, with 4 having it in both carotids, compared to 2 in the control group. Abdominal obesity and hypertriglyceridemia were notably higher in the AGA group. The study suggested that due to the high frequency of metabolic syndrome and carotid atheromatosis in AGA patients, early screening and preventive treatment for cardiovascular disease are recommended.
