TLDR Some birth control pills can cause temporary or more serious hair loss.
The document from 1978 discusses two types of hair loss associated with oral contraceptive (O.C.) use. The first type, a diffuse effluvium, typically begins 3-5 months after starting O.C. use and resolves spontaneously within a few weeks; this condition is considered completely harmless and is most often linked to combination O.C. preparations. The second type, androgenetic alopecia, is more serious and usually occurs after 6 months of O.C. use; it is specifically caused by O.C.s containing a gestagen component that is a nortestosterone derivative. Treatment for androgenetic alopecia involves switching to a nortestosterone-free O.C. or stopping O.C. use altogether. For spontaneous cases of androgenetic alopecia, gestagens with anti-androgenic effects, such as cyproterone acetate or chlormadinone acetate, are used, but the concentrations in O.C.s are insufficient for treatment, necessitating the use of specialized preparations like Androcure.
