TLDR Bio-based electrospun fibers improve wound healing but face production and regulatory challenges.
The review discussed the potential of bio-based electrospun fibers for wound healing, highlighting their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bioactivity. These fibers, created through electrospinning, mimic the extracellular matrix, promoting tissue regeneration and healing. Various biopolymers like cellulose, chitosan, and polylactides were used, offering tunable properties for advanced wound dressings. The fibers provided a moist environment, reduced bacterial infection, and allowed for bioactive molecule incorporation, enhancing healing. Studies showed improved wound closure and healing outcomes, with specific blends offering tailored properties for different medical applications. Despite promising research, commercial availability faced challenges due to production and regulatory hurdles.
