TLDR The VDR gene polymorphism does not affect BDNF levels in autoimmune thyroiditis and hypothyroidism patients.
The study conducted on 153 patients with autoimmune thyroiditis and hypothyroidism in Ukraine found that while there was a significant decrease in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in patients with AA and AG genotypes compared to a control group, there was no significant difference in BDNF levels between different Vitamin D receptor (VDR) genotypes within the study group. Additionally, a moderate direct relationship was observed between serum BDNF levels and 25-OH Vitamin D concentration. The VDR gene polymorphism (rs2228570) was not identified as a risk factor for decreased serum BDNF levels.
