TLDR Researchers developed a computer system to automatically diagnose hair loss by analyzing scalp images.
In 2018, researchers developed an automated system to diagnose hair loss using Digital Photo-Trichogram, which analyzes images of a shaved scalp to measure hair growth and estimate hair fall. The system calculates parameters like hair density, average hair dimensions, and distinguishes between hair types without manual input. Although the number of participants was not mentioned, the system was tested with samples from the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine and showed satisfactory results. It aimed to streamline the diagnostic process for alopecia, potentially saving time for patients and dermatologists. The main challenges included data collection and the segmentation of overlapping hair strands. The system was compared to the semi-automatic TrichoScan® and was part of a limited body of research in this area.
