TLDR Dr. Muhammad Ahmad created a hair classification system to help improve hair restoration surgery outcomes.
In 2017, Dr. Muhammad Ahmad introduced Ahmad's LGMA classification, a system for categorizing human hair based on spatial distribution and morphology into four types: Linear (L), Grouped (G), Mixed (M), and Angular (A). This classification, derived from high-resolution scalp photographs of South Asian adults, aims to aid hair restoration surgeons and dermatologists in recognizing natural hair patterns and selecting the correct punch size for Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures. The study indicates that this system could help predict the success of hair restoration surgeries by understanding hair follicle arrangements, potentially reducing transection rates. However, the classification's current limitation is its basis on a specific population, and further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness across diverse racial groups.
